The industry and offshore sectors report annually the off-site transfer of ordinary and hazardous waste according to the Norwegian Standard 9431 and The European Waste Catalogue respectively. Grinded food wastes and wastewater from offshore installations can be released directly to the sea as long as no chemicals are added.

Wastes generated in households are categorized in a different way. The categorization and data collection is undertaken by the Climate and Pollution Agency and Statistics Norway.
